2011

Here we are in 2011 and I can't help but think it feels a lot like 2010. Because really, it's just the next day in a series of days that make up our life. So, why do we feel the need to make these resolutions towards a better life. Why not start on December 28th? I guess there is the hope that the new year will be like an etch a sketch...you can shake away all the mistakes from the previous year and start with a clean screen. Where so many people fail and ultimately give up on their resolutions is that their expectations set them up for failure. Because, like an etch a sketch, the older it gets the harder it is for the screen to ever get really clean. You're coming in to the new year exactly who you were the previous year; all the debt, all the weight, all the mental baggage is still there. I know this sounds depressing and negative, but that's not where I'm going with this. To make the changes you so desperately want, you need to understand how you got there in the first place. You need to change the mind. You need to remember who you were on December 31st, so that you can remind yourself of why you're doing this. It isn't about starting over, it's about learning from your mistakes. I've seen people post statuses that say 'so much for this year being any different'. Well, what are you doing differently? The year isn't going to get miraculously better, but your attitude can, the way you react to it can. The new year is just another day in series of days that make up your life. Change the day, change the way you react to the day's difficulties. Don't worry about what year it is, just choose today.

I've posted this quote in the past, but it's a good one...

We cannot choose how many years we will live, but we can choose how much life those years will have. We cannot control the beauty of our face, but we can control the expression on it. We cannot control life's difficult moments but we can choose to make life less difficult. We cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world, but we can control the atmosphere of our minds. Too often we try to choose and control things we cannot. Too seldom we choose to control what we can … our attitude. ~ John Maxwell
